is this improper etiqu

However, if your daughter helped you pick out the dress, that makes all the difference. If she is comfortable with it and you are comfortable with it, then the question is answered.

Generally the mother of the bride will wear a dress complimentary to the colors of the wedding. Now I have been to a wedding where the colors were black and white and it was quite striking! If that is what your daughter is doing, or if the colors are red and white or something like that, black would go beautifully.

IF they are wearing black, then black is okay for the mother split voor Prom Dresses of the bride. If not, then it is still considered a social blunder. It is wise to steer clear of any color that some may take as a sign of disapproval of the wedding - and that is what black does.

You want to choose a color that is complimentary to the bridesmaid dresses, for the photos. Rather than ask for a clarification, I've covered conventional "rules" in my answer, and if it's unconventional, then have fun, and explain to your mom Korte Trouwjurk that this wedding isn't traditional and that both you and your daughter are fine with the Cocktailjurken black!

That being said, while you may full approve of the union, there may be others there who see a black dress as an affront to the newlyweds. Of course, does anyone else's opinions matter anyway? As the MOB, you are no doubt footing a good portion of the bill, so if you look great and your daughter is ok with it, then take your cue from that. Its all about her anyway.
