It time to cover up at the Cup

While many young women have been wearing outfits better suited to nightclubs than trackside, South Australian Jockey Club deputy vice-chairman Sharon Forrester-Jones is predicting a traditional racewear revival for this year's race meeting at Allan Scott Park, Morphettville.

"The Adelaide Casino Adelaide Cup is all about elegance, with popular choices for race day including well-cut dresses that fall to the knee or beautiful sleeves," she said. "Chic and sophistication is back, so Lange Cocktailjurken avoid exposing too much skin."

Ms Forrester-Jones, who will be judging this Trouwjurken year's Myer Fashions on the Field South Australian final at the event, said wearing a jacket or bolero with a dress was a stylish choice.

The preference for elegance over strapless and short dresses also is being attributed to the popularity of the television series Mad Men .

The drama features ladylike fashions not unlike the Alannah Hill designs and Adelaide Hatters headpieces worn here by Eliza and Abbie from Pride Models.

The model agency's creative director Christabel Buder said one of this year's hottest trends, 1940s glamour - pencil skirts, pretty blouses and tailored jackets - would "translate beautifully into racewear".

"This trend is ultra-feminine and reminds us of the elegance of past icons like Lauren Bacall and Katharine Hepburn or the Korte Avondjurken characters in Mad Men ," she said. "Ladylike elegance is a gorgeous look for the races and far more appropriate than club wear."
